The sex toy - not necessarily a modern thing

Sex toys have come a long way from the once ground breaking appearance of the Rabbit Vibe in the hit show ‘Sex and the City’ at the back end of the 90s. Since then, the Rabbit has quickly become something of a household name. Despite this though, according to records, the vibe, or the dildo, has fluctuated in terms of the level of acceptance for centuries.

The sex toy dates back thousands upon thousands of years and the first ever sex aid, or at least as far back as we know, dates back 30,000 years and took the form of a silt stone phallus. We have brought you news of the 'steam-powered manipulator’, a far cry from the all singing, techy vibrators that we have today but sexperts believe that the oldest recorded sex toys were made from somewhat unforgiving materials like stone, tar and wood.

Surprisingly enough, they also claim that perceptions and opinions of sex toys have done a full circle over the centuries. In Ancient Greece, sex toys were celebrated, and even painted onto vases, along with images of females indulging in their own pleasures with phallic objects. These images were also said to have been replicated on stage in 6th BC comedy. Contrast this was the ‘hush hush’ Victorian society, where as we mentioned, the first motor powered vibrator was born in the form of the‘manipulator’. Powered entirely by steam, the thing had its own mechanism, so big it was located in another room.

Despite the obvious taboos in Victorian times, attitudes had been more open than in 1970s texas, where they saw a series of laws passed in 1973, banning Texans from buying dildos of any kind. This was a law that was upheld until 2008.

Times have changed

Cultures are changing and more and more people are embracing sex toys. We are reading stories about the hosts of the winter Olympics giving out free sex aids to competitors and the sex toys are now bring used as every day accessories, and to spice up sex lives and there is very little to rival the Naomi Tang in the battle of modern sex toys, with its touch sensor controls.
