The land of the rising sun - and sex toys

As China becomes wealthier, attitudes are becoming more liberal – including attitudes to sex.

Despite the traditional restraint that many older Chinese people live by, the younger generations are exploring their sexuality much more freely and saucy sex toy shops have become increasingly common.

To document this huge change, an Australian filmmaker, Sam Voutas, decided to make Red Light Revolution, a film about a down and out Chinese man who decides to open a sex shop.

Voutas says that he was stunned to see large numbers of sex shops on street corners when he travelled to the East Asian country to prepare for the film. After deciding upon the concept he was contacted by a sex shop chain who wanted to sponsor the project, and this company ended up providing the masses of sex toys that were eventually used in the production.

Voutas ended up keeping these accessories in his house after filming. “The first thing I’ve gotta decide is what to do with all the sex toys,” the director said after wrapping up the final scenes. “I’m looking forward to getting them out of my apartment!”

Interestingly, Voutas said he found that traditional reservations prevented there from being complete openness about sex toys in the country. For instance the lead actress in the film told him that she hadn’t told her parent’s what the movie was about. Then again, there are probably many people in the UK and the US who would have done the same if they were put into her shoes!

Voutas said that since the film is a comedy, he hopes people with any reservations will be able to laugh off any embarrassment about watching it.
